If the piece is fragile thin or delicate it may work best to mount it onto a stretcher frame similar to an artistes canvas.

Recently I just mounted three carpet fragments the first onto a deep blue material and the other two onto neutral linen.

 This silk  is displayed beautifully as a mounted piece.
